Objectives

A student completing the Massage Therapy program will be prepared for employment as a licensed Massage Therapist. Graduated students will meet the requirements to obtain the state license and face the current job market with the skills and knowledge to become a massage therapist for beauty salons, spas, clinics, and any facility that offers massage services.

Description

This program is designed for extensive training in Massage Therapy. Students will learn techniques through intensive theory study and hands on practice. A student that enrolls in our school is provided the the books and equipment needed to develop his/her specialty, as well as having technically qualified instructors to provide quality teaching. This program has been created to provide a formation in Massage Therapy that complies with the requirements established by the governmental organizations. It is also designed to train the students in the skills required for massage therapy at the entry level, which includes: Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology; Basic Massage Theory and History; Massage Allied Modalities; Hydrotherapy; Professional Ethics; Florida Laws and Rules; Prevention of Medical Errors; HIV/AIDS; and Business, Clinical Practicum.

Program Description

ANATOMY, PHYSIOLOGY AND PATHOLOGY (APPL200), 150 CLOCK HOURS

This course will provide an introduction to the medical terminology, anatomical direction and organization of the human body. The course will cover the basic Anatomy, Physiology, and Pathology terms based on the relationship between structure and function of the cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems. The students will learn the general characteristics of the cell and the structure and functions of the four types of tissues, organs, and eleven organ systems.

BASIC MASSAGE THEORY AND HISTORY (MTHC210), 110 CLOCK HOURS

This course will cover the history, philosophy, and effects of the bodywork approach. The students will learn the historical significance of massage as the oldest curative method for relieving pain and discomfort. In addition, the course will provide lessons about the recorded history of massage from ancient time to its current status in the world today, as well as the massage recorded history. The students will be able to learn the basic bodywork approach, such as the Swedish Massage Technique, products and tools used for different modalities, client preparation and draping, effects and benefits, and contraindications. The course will be focused on elements of massage therapy for each session, massage for different body regions, and endangerment sites.

CLINICAL PRACTICUM (CPC400), 138 CLOCK HOURS

This is a practical course, where the students will be able to recognize the importance of maintaining satisfactory work regarding established clinic office procedures. They will apply theoretical content, such as client scheduling, schedule of availability, client check in, initial consultations, client records, filing systems, and managing finances and payments. In addition, the students will understand established clinic procedures regarding handling clients’ personal effects, dressing/changing areas, draping procedures, handling inappropriate behaviors exhibited by clients, indications and contraindications for massage, application of techniques satisfactory to the client, sanitary practices, personal hygiene, and professional ethics. The practical activities in this course will be focused on teaching job skills and clinic procedures regarding supervision of massage therapy activities.

MASSAGE ALLIED MODALITIES (NAMC2200), 106 CLOCK HOURS

This course teaches the allied modalities, such as Oriental Modalities, Ayurvedic Chakras Massage, Reflexology, Aromatherapy, Connective Tissue Massage, Neuromuscular Therapy, Rolfing, Deep Tissue Massage, Alexander Technique, Craniosacral Therapy, Lymphatic Drainage, and Sports Massage, including techniques using the chair massage.

BUSINESS HEALTH AND HYGIENE FOR MASSAGE PRACTITIONERS (BHHC300), 20 CLOCK HOURS

This course will cover physical and psychological conditions for a massage therapist that are required to provide excellent service to clients, as well as for the growth of the business. The students will be able to understand the scope of practice and legal business structures, the importance of the basic legal business structures and tax obligations, and the business structures and relationships available in the market place. The students will recognize the requirements related to good communication with clients.

THEORY AND PRACTICE OF HYDROTHERAPY (TPHC230), 40 CLOCK HOURS

This course will cover the historical practice of hydrotherapy, and the terms used that are related to this modality.The students will learn practical applications, which include an approach to hydrotherapy treatment with confidence and assurance. They will learn how to use the equipment and its application. In addition, the course will focus on the following topics: general results desired with the application of hydrotherapy, administering baths with full knowledge of the desired effects, the performance of therapeutic massage in water, including full body immersion of client and types of compresses to use to achieve various outcomes. Cryotherapy will be studied also.

FLORIDA LAWS AND RULES (FLRC310) , 12 CLOCK HOURS

In this course, the students will study the state laws, rules and occupations code for Florida. The students will be prepared to know the licensing agency for massage therapy, including certification and licensing requirements. During the course, the students will understand the requirements necessary to keep a safe environment, insurances issues, laws and liabilities, differences between assessment and diagnosis, and rules of the massage therapy license.

PROFESSIONAL ETHICS (PEC320) , 8 CLOCK HOURS

This course will cover professional ethics in the therapeutic setting. The students will be able to understand the general ethical requirements established for therapeutic massage in the country today, as well as the state code of ethics. In addition, the students in this course will study other topics, such as understanding informed consent, professional boundaries and confidentiality, managing potentially uncomfortable situations, sexual misconduct, requisites for advertising, professional ethics and etiquette, professional standards, safety in the work place, and preventing communicable diseases.

AIDS / HIV (HIAC330), 4 CLOCK HOURS

This course will provide an introduction to the history of HIV/AIDS from the beginning. The students will be able to understand the basics of Virology and Immunology for HIV based on transmission and risk factors, classification of HIV disease, primary HIV infection, chronic HIV infection, clinical AIDS, special considerations in disease progression, host factors, HIV Antigen Testing, and HIV Resistance Testing. The students will understand therapeutic drug monitoring, viral factors, infections, long-term non-progressors, and laboratory testing. The course is designed to cover topics such as HIV antibody testing, "detuned" antibody testing, CD4 testing, treatment of HIV infection, antiretroviral medications, initiating treatment, and health care maintenance in HIV infection.

PREVENTION OF MEDICAL ERRORS (PMEC340), 12 CLOCK HOURS

This course will cover the prevention of medical errors for massage therapy based on the classification of errors. The students will be able to define medical error according to the causes of medical errors, error taxonomy, error domains, and human factors. In this course students will discuss significant topics such as prevention strategies, documentation, communication and collaboration, patient management, and root cause analysis.
